Finally, Toshiba has made available for commercial use and distribution a large screen glasses-free 3D TV, which is the 55” Toshiba 55RZ1.

Toshiba has been harping about its own 3DTV technology that practically required no nerdy and bulky pair of glasses. Toshiba’s glasses-free 3DTV technology employs sophisticated lenticular lens to deliver multiple views to produce 3D images without any need for glasses.

This 3D technology is based on the “stereoscopic principle” of simultaneously delivering slightly offset (parallax) images to the left and right eyes. The brain then superimposes the images, creating the 3D effect. To achieve this without any need for dedicated glasses, the lens must accurately guide the dedicated images to the viewer’s eyes.

With the Toshiba 55RZ1, Toshiba has also drawn on its industry-leading capabilities in imaging algorithms and processor technologies to calculate multiple viewpoints for stereoscopic images and to display them at very high picture quality on a large screen. The array of lenticular lens integrated into the 55RZ1 is the first ever in such a large-screen TV.

In addition, the Toshiba 55RZ1’s integral imaging technology is powered by the REGZA ENGINE CEVO DUO S, which makes the TV capable of delivering nine views to create multiple wide-angle viewing zones in front of the glasses-free 3D TV. This not only creates a stunning, glasses-free 3D image, it also allows a large group of viewers, each facing the screen from a different angle, to share the 3D experience.

According to Toshiba officials , the Toshiba 55RZ1 is also the first TV to feature a “Quad Full HD” screen or a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixel panel.

An additional bonus of the 55RZ1’s high resolution screen is the ability to display 2D content in Quad Full HD resolution. In other words, photos captured with an 8-megapixel camera can be displayed on screen with almost no compromise in image quality.

Other features of the Toshiba 55RZ1 include face-tracking, which gets activated at the push of the remote. It detects the viewer’s position to optimize viewing ones and sets up the total viewing experience.

The REGZA ENGINE CEVO DUO S, Toshiba’s high-performance multi-processor platform, is the powerhouse of the 55RZ1. The REGZA ENGINE CEVO DUO S’s outstanding technology delivers the massive calculating power needed to manage Toshiba’s complex algorithms and generate the depth information essential for creating the 3D effect and calculating nine different viewing angles.
