Smart offers P1 smartphone

For just one peso, more Filipinos can now experience the smartphone lifestyle and enjoy the convenience of mobile Internet.

Wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is holding the first ever ‘Piso Sale’ on a selection of handsets – including Android smartphones Netphone 701 and Huawei IDEOS – bundled with the bestselling Unli Postpaid Plan 599. The one-peso payment shall be charged only once.

The other handsets included in the Piso Sale are the Alcatel OT-506D, Cherry Mobile D13, Nokia 2730c, Nokia C2-01, Nokia X2-01, and the touchscreen Samsung Champ (C3303). All these phones are Java-capable, meaning they allow the installation of basic applications.

The promo will run until March 23 and can be availed of on a first come, first served basis at Smart Stores nationwide. Smart’s Unli Postpaid Plan 599 comes with a lock-in period of 24 months, and provides unlimited SMS and calls to any Smart or Talk ‘N Text number.

“Smart has enhanced what is already a bestselling plan, keeping in mind the growing demand for smartphones in the country,” said Smart Mobile Marketing Head Guido Xavier Zaballero.

“Not only will this device-plan combo allow Smart subscribers to make unlimited calls and texts to Smart and Talk N’ Text subscribers, it will also enable them to enjoy their favorite applications while they are on the go,” he added.

Both the Netphone 701 and Huawei IDEOS run on Android, enabling them to access thousands of free applications through the Android Market.

With the rise in popularity of gaming, entertainment, information, utility, and productivity applications, more and more Filipinos are switching to smartphones and Java phones. Smart recorded a spike in smartphone use from end-August to end-December 2011, with Google’s Android operating system posting a whopping 300% increase in usage. The demand for smartphones is expected to grow stronger this year.

“Smartphone owners are assured that they can make full use of their devices under the Smart network, which is the most advanced in the Philippines,” Zaballero said.

Smart’s superior matrix of 3G, Enhanced High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+), WiMax, and Long Term Evolution (LTE) brings strong Internet connection to more parts of the country.

Smart and parent company Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. are now on the final stretch of their P67.1-billion network transformation program, which has enhanced Smart’s data connection speeds, SMS delivery, voice connection, and voice quality. The modernization effort is expected to be completed in the middle of the year.
